Kevin Liu, Boingo Wireless
A highly skilled and highly trained software engineer, Kevin Liu has overcome tremendous technical hurdles to bring Boingo Wireless’ IPTV product to military troops around the world. As senior software engineer at Boingo, Liu defines, designs and manages the unique Boingo IPTV product custom-made for men and women living in the barracks of the U.S. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, competing with traditional cable in each of those markets.
To be sure, the troops had big demands. They wanted speed and reliability—but also portability to suit their transient lifestyle. So Liu’s meticulous engineering enabled customers who sign up on one Boingo-networked base to take their service plans to another, with no account changes necessary. Not only that, Liu has helped launch the Boingo Broadband business’ skinny bundle—called Core TV—and Liu served as Boingo’s go-to engineer on the project. Engineering the IPTV skinny bundle from the ground up, he oversaw the integration of necessary plug-ins, partners and rights to broadcast all content in High Definition.
When Boingo wanted to make the service work on Amazon Fire TV devices, Liu re-programmed the service for an innovative streaming stick that plugs into a television’s HDMI port. In the words of his supervisor, Boingo Vice President of Engineering, Steve Moller, his work was “above and beyond what we asked for.”
