TelevisaUnivision Goes Dark On Fubo
Fubo has another fight on its hands after TelevisaUnivision programming went dark on the vMVPD’s lineup in the U.S. Fubo claims the carriage dispute is “the result of TelevisaUnivision refusing to offer what we believe to be fair and competitive rates” and that the Spanish-language media company is using its market power to drive up prices.
“Fubo has made considerable efforts and offered compromises to renew our long-standing content agreement for TelevisaUnivision and its affiliated channels. However, TelevisaUnivision presented us with a new contract with restructured terms that would increase prices by 25% for our subscribers,” Fubo said in a statement. “Furthermore, TelevisaUnivision’s unfair bundling and tying practices require Fubo subscribers to buy all of their channels, including the channels they don’t watch.”
TelevisaUnivision sees things differently, of course, stating that Fubo won’t pay the fair market value that it holds with other distributors.
“TelevisaUnivision’s content is vital to Spanish-speaking audiences, providing trusted news, sports and entertainment programming that deeply resonates with our community. We have been working in good faith to reach an agreement with Fubo to avoid this outcome, but they refuse to pay the market value that other distributors have agreed to. Fortunately, our channels are broadly distributed across many platforms, ensuring our audience has plenty of options to continue enjoying our programming while we work towards a resolution,” the network said in a statement to CFX.
Fubo added that it’s ready to sit down at the negotiating table, but a deal “must be fair and equitable for our subscribers. That includes accessing Spanish-language content in our Latino plan at a cost that is competitive.” Fubo still has Spanish-language content from networks such as beIN Sports Español, Estrella, Nat Geo Mundo and WAPA.
