Virginia’s Volume II BEAD proposal got its long-awaited approval from NTIA Friday, opening the door for the state to access $1.4 billion in funding for broadband deployment and adoption initiatives.

The proposal has been closely watched as the state’s approach to the low-cost plan requirement had reportedly caused some friction, with Virginia avoiding setting out a price or formula and instead having subgrantees submit low-cost options.

“Since 2017, VCTA Members have partnered with the Commonwealth to deliver universal broadband coverage—and we remain committed to continuing our work with state leaders to put this proposal into action,” said Ray LaMura, President of the VCTA – Broadband Association of Virginia. “We look forward to continuing as strong partners to ensure that these taxpayer-funded investments are spent responsibly to bring internet connectivity both on-time and on-budget to our unserved communities.”

NTIA also announced approval of New Mexico’s Volume II proposal, clearing the way for its $675 million in BEAD funding.
