Wednesday night’s festivities at The Independent Show included the awards dinner. Cablefax kicked the ceremony off by recognizing Schurz Communications as its Top Ops Independent Operator of the Year before NCTC CEO Lou Borrelli honored Buckeye Broadband’s Brad Mefferd with a custom Cleveland Browns jersey for his time spent on the NCTC board.

Cogeco Combining Breezeline with Canadian Operations
Breezeline President Frank van der Post is leaving to pursue other opportunities as parent company Cogeco announced a new structure taking effect Sept. 1 that combines the commercial, operational and technical functions of its Canadian and U.S. telecom businesses into a single North American organization.

Canada Invests $71 Million in Expanding Broadband Access
Canada is also taking the issue of broadband availability seriously, announcing more than $71 million in federal and provincial funding for Bell Canada and Cogeco to build out to more than 22,000 homes in Ontario.

FCC Proposes Fines for RDOF Defaults
The FCC is going after those that defaulted in the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund auction, proposing more than $4.3 million in fines against 73 applicants. The largest proposed fine is $2.3 million for LTD Broadband. More than $1.2 million of the proposed forfeitures are aimed at Charter.
